Where Did We Go?
When we created this blog, there was little in the way of positive news about Baylor. After we were updating this regularly, we are glad to say that two things happened which make it unnecessary to update this blog: (1) Friends of Baylor began regular e-mails sending out Good News about Baylor. We didn't mind that they used our concept. The important thing was that the news was being distributed widely. To join Friends of Baylor and receive their e-mails: Click Here
(2) Baylor University has begun sending regular e-mails with good news also, entitled Baylor Proud. To subscribe, send an e-mail to: baylorproud@baylor.edu. They also have started a Baylor Proud web site: Click Here

Big XII; 2 Champions!
The Baylor men’s and women’s tennis teams claimed Big XII Championships on Sunday in Kansas City. The men beat Texas 4-1 to earn their fifth consecutive title while the women beat Texas 4-3 for their second straight championship. Baylor also claimed the tournament’s most outstanding player awards with the honors going to Michal Kokta and Iva Mihaylova.
The Baylor tennis program is a national powerhouse due to the great leadership of coaches Matt Knoll and Joe Scrivano. We must also acknowledge the tireless efforts of Friends of Baylor Steering Committee member Scott Livesay in raising the funds to establish our tennis program. Dr. Livesay’s continued efforts will likely lead to more exciting news about Baylor tennis.
Congrats to the fabulous players and coaches for both teams and thanks to all those Baylor fans who helped create this terrific asset for the University. A tennis watch party will be held today at 1:15 pm in the Stone reception room at the Ferrell Center to see where the Bears will be seeded and play in the NCAA tournament. For more information call (254) 710-3073.
Waco Trib Gives Dr. Lilley High Marks for 2012
A recent article in the Waco Trib (Sunday, April 22nd) gave strong praise to Dr. John Lilley for his first year’s performance as the University’s President. Quoting faculty, students and Regent Chair Jim Turner, the comprehensive assessment of the President was that he was making great progress with the goals of Baylor 2012. Baylor 2012 has proven to be a very effective model and plan for Baylor. Its component parts: the integration of faith and learning, creating a residential campus, increasing the academic standing of the University, raising the endowment to $2 billion, etc., are all ambitious but progressing nicely under Dr. Lilley’s leadership. Congrats to Dr. Lilley and to the Waco Trib for noticing.
Baylor Business Network Wins Award
The Baylor Business Network received the Bobby G. Bizzell Innovation award for the Southwest Business Dean’s Association at their annual meeting in San Antonio. The Baylor Business Network does an outstanding job getting Baylor alumni together as well as educating Baylor alums with terrific programs. Case in point, the Baylor Business Network of Dallas’ program this morning featuring Comstock Resources CEO and Baylor Regent Jay Allison. A standing room only crowd showed up at 7:00 am to hear Jay and fellowship with other Bears. Congrats to Baylor Network’s Senior Executive Director Brenda Morris.
Softball Wins Crucial Game Against Mizzou
Stays tied for first place
After a 4-3 heartbreaking loss to Missouri on Saturday, the Lady Bears rallied to beat them in the re-match Sunday, 3-0. The win enabled Baylor to remain tied with Mizzou for first place in the Big XII standings. Baylor controls her own destiny and can win the Big XII championship by beating Texas this week. Come support the Lady Bears Thursday, May 3 at 6:30 pm at Getterman Stadium.
Sepulveda and Wilson Drafted
All-World punter Daniel Sepulveda and defensive back C.J. Wilson were selected in the NFL draft this past weekend. Daniel went in the fourth round to the Pittsburg Steelers and C.J. was picked in the seventh round by the Carolina Panthers. We sure enjoyed having these two fine athletes on our campus and look forward to watching them on Sundays.
Coach Kim and The Lady Bears
Baylor did a wise thing last week in extending Coach Kim Mulkey’s contract and rewarding her for the outstanding performance as the coach of the women’s basketball team. Those in attendance at the Lady Bear’s Appreciation Night at the Ferrell Center where the season and team were recently celebrated have an even greater appreciation for this wisdom. Almost 1,000 Baylor fans attended an event that was full of excitement, great comedy, poignancy and of course with Coach Kim, great energy. Lady Bears Jhasmin Player and Bernice Mosby really stole the show with their respective performances. It was very evident to all in attendance that Baylor’s women’s basketball program is stellar by all measurements and has an incredible future as well.

Heartbreak at the OK Corral
women's softball
The No. 7 Baylor softball team dropped a pair of heartbreakers to No. 4 Oklahoma last night in Norman. Both games came down to the final inning of play with our Lady Bears playing valiantly. Not to worry, however, even with the two losses Baylor remains in first place in the Big XII standings.
Baylor Whips Texas!
men's tennis
Always feels good to say that, doesn’t it? The No. 4 Baylor men’s tennis team remained undefeated in Big XII competition by crushing Texas 6-1 in Austin last night. Baylor’s season record is now 20-3 and Coach Knoll’s clan is eyeing another run at the National Championship. Way to go netters!
Baylor CEO’s Setting “Blessing” Records
Mark Hurd Bob Simpson
Mark Hurd, CEO of Hewlett-Packard and Bob Simpson, CEO of XTO Energy had great years in 2006 according to recently released public statements. Both companies had terrific growth and earnings for their shareholders, and their leaders, have been rewarded significantly for their success. “Yea” for Hewlett-Packard and XTO Energy. “Yea” for Bob and Mark. “Yea” for the Hankamer School of Business.
Speaking of CEO’s, Jay Allison to Address Baylor Business Network
Jay Allison
Jay Allison, CEO of Comstock Resources, former Baylor football great, extreme marathoner and Baylor Regent will speak at the Baylor Business Network of Dallas breakfast event on May 1. Jay is known for many things Baylor related and famous in the oil and gas industry, but in the Dallas area Jay is perhaps most well known for his establishment of Legacy Christian Academy in Frisco. Legacy is one of the fastest growing schools in the area and an outstanding Christian education product. Come hear Jay. Check out The Baylor Network to get the details.
Coach Drew Does it Again! Two Super Recruits Commit to Baylor
Coach Drew
Talk about long range planning. Coach Scott Drew landed two elite prospects this week for the 2011 class. That’s right, two incredible high school freshman, Jamison Sterns of Waxahachie and Perry Jones of Dallas committed to the Bears this week. Sterns a 5’11” point guard and Jones a 6’8” power forward are so good that they have been recruited nationally even though they probably haven’t quit growing yet and they can’t yet qualify for a driver’s license. What we want to know is how young were Jamison and Perry when Scott started this recruiting process. Way to go Coach!
Baylor Faculty and the Presidential Election
Thanks in part to the outstanding scholarship of our faculty as well as the Baylor Survey of Religion that received so much publicity, Baylor is often referred to on matters of “faith” in national news articles. An interesting debate has emerged in the presidential campaign as to which party has the more outspoken believers as candidates for the White House. To some voters this information is considered critical and for others the debate itself is considered a slippery slope. Friends of Baylor merely refers you to the comments of our learned faculty as expressed in two articles in The Baptist Standard, one regarding the Democratic and the other the Republican presidential race.
Baylor to Host National Championship
women's equestrian
Although Baylor has recently won two National Championships, we had to travel to Tulsa (men’s tennis) and Indianapolis (women’s basketball) to witness the marvelous events. Today, you can watch the Equestrian National Championship that is hosted by Baylor in Waco! Baylor’s English and Western equestrian teams will be competing for the National Championship at the Heart of Texas Fair Complex. Come support Coach Ellen White and the Lady Bear riders.
Jeremy Wariner Wants to Beat His Agent
Jeremy Wariner
Gold medal winner Jeremy Wariner is out to beat the 400-meter world record set by his agent and mentor, Michael Johnson. This record, 43.18 seconds, set by Michael at the Atlanta games was once thought untouchable. But with Clyde Hart’s and Michael’s help, Jeremy is closing in on that number. Jeremy already broke 44 seconds three times in 2006, including a personal best of 43.62. As long as all the records stay in the Baylor family, we will be happy.

Virginia Tech
The following was issued by President Lilley today in light of the tragedy at Virginia Tech. How good it is that we have a God we can go to at a time like this. Please pray that God would use this great evil for much good (see, generally, Genesis 50:20), and that many who today have no meaning in life would seek and find Christ as a result of these terrible and sad events.

Forever a Bear! Coach Kim and Baylor Make Long Term Contract
Baylor women’s basketball head coach Kim Mulkey and Baylor University reaffirmed their love for, and commitment to each other with the execution of a 10 year contract yesterday. Coach Kim, with one National Championship already hanging from the rafters at the Ferrell Center, will now be an institutionalized force with the Lady Bears. Coach Kim told Friends of Baylor, “I am quite humbled and honored by Baylor’s show of appreciation, support and confidence in me and the Lady Bears program.” It is a great day for Baylor athletics and a big “Sic’em” is due Athletic Director Ian McCaw as well as President John Lilley for their leadership in keeping our beloved Coach Kim. Read today's story in the Waco Trib to get the full scoop.
Bob Perry and Texas Monthly
Texas Monthly has a reputation for writing fairly tough essays on high profile Texans, particularly those with more conservative credentials. However, a much anticipated major story on Friends of Baylor Co-Chairman Bob Perry in this month’s edition of Texas Monthly has somewhat surprisingly resulted in a quite positive review. Bob’s credentials as the largest political donor in the nation have tended to overwhelm what Texas Monthly astutely observes to be incredible generosity for the disenfranchised. Bob is the primary donor for several orphanages in Central and South America, and a jobs program for injured military veterans. He provided $1 million for scholarships for Mexican American studies at the University of Houston, as well as $1 million for a YMCA in League City. In the true spirit of giving, Bob is identified in the article as being someone who gives quietly, boldly and without the expectation of personal public attention or rewards. Bob, his record and his heart are to be admired. Friends of Baylor is proud to be associated with such a fine man and loyal Baylor Bear! Take a look at the March 28 story in The Campaign Legal Center article to learn more.
Dr. Ken Hall, Dr. Paul Powell and Dr. Tony Evans
Three great men and three great upcoming Baylor events. Friends of Baylor Steering Committee member Dr. Ken Hall will address the Baylor University Women’s Council of Dallas on Thursday, April 26th at the Dallas Country Club. Dr. Hall, President and CEO of Buckner International is helping to raise money for the Anita and Dale Jones Endowed Scholarship Fund. For more information, contact Dorothy Smith at (972) 238-5722.
Dr. Paul Powell will be honored for his outstanding service as Dean of Truett Theological Seminary on Tuesday, April 10th. Dr. Powell has been a force behind the fabulous growth of the Truett Seminary and is considered one of the greatest preachers that Baylor has ever produced.
Outstanding Pastor and speaker Dr. Tony Evans will lead the 4th Annual Baylor Day of Prayer (Dallas) on Monday, May 14th. In addition to his preaching skills, Dr. Evans is the father of former Baylor football player, Jonathan Evans. For more information go to www.baylordayofprayer.com.
Baylor Softball on Fire!
The No. 11 Baylor Softball team won a HUGE game Wednesday night against No. 4 Texas A&M AT College Station. The Lady Bears won an extra-inning thriller by a score of 3-1, giving Baylor 9 wins in a row and a 5-0 record in Big XII play. This team has loads of talent and leadership, and is a legitimate contender for the College World Series. The Lady Bears head to Lubbock today for a two game series with Texas Tech. Engineers with a Mission
We came across an article in the Baptist Standard about a group of Baylor Engineering students, utilizing "appropriate technology" to bring electricity to a remote village in Honduras. The faculty adviser to Engineers with a Mission is lecturer Brian Thomas, who credits "Walter Bradley, distinguished professor of mechanical engineering at Baylor, for introducing him to the concept of appropriate technology."
According to the article: "The engineering Honduras trip is part of a much larger Baylor project to bring “appropriate technologies” to developing countries. The appropriate technology approach is based on helping people in other countries develop needed infrastructure, such as clean drinking water and reliable power sources. The approach also helps locals identify timely products utilizing their natural resources to produce for the world market."
The article includes information about Baylor students in other disciplines who are making a difference, using the skills and knowledge acquired at Baylor to help others throughout the world. The article sets forth that: "“By helping students see how their specific abilities and interests may be of service to others and how Christians are called to loving responsiveness to those in need, the program aspires to help inform a long-term sensitivity to a Christian calling, whether in the context of professional or lay ministry,” said Dub Oliver, vice president for student life at Baylor."

Excellent Progress on Baylor 2012 Noted
The Waco Tribune-Herald, which often has appeared to be at odds with the Baylor 2012 initiative, has published what can only be described as a glowing endorsement of the program and the progress in implementing the 12 Baylor 2012 Imperatives. The full report may be found here: WacoTrib Report Card on Baylor 2012
The WacoTrib found that two of the goals have already been met, seven are in good progress towards completion, and three are incomplete at this time.

Good News from Baylor University
March 23, 2007
Too Much Good News!
The excellence called for in Baylor 2012 has manifested itself in such mega doses lately that a “Spring Break” for the Friends of Baylor e-mail last week has left us with almost too much good news to report. Achievements academically, in sports, as well as some unique opportunities to further distinguish Baylor’s Christian mission leaves us no choice but to relate to you the “glad tidings” by category. Even the outstanding “Report Card on Baylor 2012” that the Waco Trib reported on March 11 is already somewhat outdated. Here goes………
Academics
David Garland • Nationally renowned New Testament scholar Dr. David E. Garland has been appointed Dean of Truett Seminary replacing Baptist Hall of Famer and nationally renowned good guy, Paul Powell. The press release describing the spiritual scholarship of Dr. Garland and the career accomplishments of Paul Powell is 8 pages long which illustrates the body of good works that these gentlemen possess. Dr. Garland is also married to the distinguished Dean of the School of Social Work at Baylor, Dr. Diana Garland.
Pattie Orr • Distinguished Wellesley Officer, Pattie Orr, has been appointed Baylor Vice President for Information Technology and Dean of Libraries. Drawn to Baylor by the “commitments to excellence” in Baylor 2012, Pattie Orr’s recruitment from well regarded Wellesley is a great coup for the University. In addition to her technical credentials, Pattie, a native of Texas, was faculty advisor to the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship and has a daughter and son-in-law on the faculty at Baylor.
• Hankamer School of Business has been named by BusinessWeek as one of the top 25 private undergraduate business schools in the nation.
• Baylor student Brittany Mays has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to South Korea.
• Truman Scholar – although not officially announced, one of the record number of Baylor students to be nominated as a Truman Scholar has in fact been selected for this prestigious award.
Christian Mission
Engineers on a mission• A group of outstanding Baylor engineering students are on a mission to deliver electricity to a remote area of Honduras. Led by grad student Ryan McGhee these self described “Engineers with a Mission” are designing and building a turbine that will help power a hydroelectric generator. Read the March 22 Baylor News piece to get the full story. In Ryan’s words, “I have been given a specific skill set for engineering work and while I'm not the type of person who can get up in front of a church group and play music, I can sit behind a desk and do calculations. Hopefully I can bring glory to God that way."
• Relevant Magazine, a publication read by many young Christians, rated Baylor as the Number “1” Christian University in the country. Looks like Coach Mulkey and Coach Knoll just got a little competition.
Sports
• Lady Bears basketball ended much too early for our liking with an overtime loss to N.C. State 78-72. We were one shot short of making our 4th consecutive Sweet 16 appearance. However, we are very young and were not supposed to be so good so early. The next couple of years will be special!
• Men’s basketball ended as well but not without significant late season success and promise for the future. A thumping of Mizzou in round one of the Big XII Tournament and a thriller against heavily favored Texas suggest great things for Coach Drew’s also very young squad. Buy your tickets now while they are still cheap.
Men's Track Women's Softball • Baylor men’s 4x400-meter relay team clocked the World’s fastest time this year to claim its seventh indoor national championship (duh?).
• Number 4 ranked men’s tennis defeated No. 2 Virginia and Georgia Tech. Big XII play starts today at Nebraska.
• Number 10 ranked Baylor softball starts Big XII Conference play vs. Nebraska this weekend.
• Number 25 ranked women’s tennis defeated Kansas State 7-0.
• Undefeated 2007 Baylor Bears football team began spring drills this week!
Baylor 2012
Excellent faculty, excellent scholarship, excellent students, excellent sports achievements, and a clear Christian mission and identity. Just too much to report on……

Regent Reports Progress on 2012 Initiatives
The recently completed Regents meeting reported significant progress on Initiatives 4, 5 and 6 of Baylor 2012. The Baylor website report on the meeting includes the following (the complete news release may be found here: Report on February 2007 Regents Meeting)
"Discussion on Imperative 4 (attract and support a top-tier student body) focused on the continued strong interest in Baylor shown by students with outstanding academic records and character consistent with the university's mission. As of Jan. 17, Baylor had received 23,157 applications for this fall's freshman class, and had accepted 6,763. The average SAT of all accepted students currently is a record 1253, while the average ACT score of admitted students exceeds 26.
"The presentation on Imperative 5 (initiate outstanding new academic programs) highlighted new programs such as the Honors College and Great Texts, numerous proposed doctoral programs and the 100 percent increase in Baylor faculty publications in major research journals.
"On Imperative 6 (guide all Baylor students, through academic and student life programming, to understand life as stewardship and work as a vocation), the board's discussion centered on Baylor's undergraduate programs that emphasize the central importance of vocation and service in students' lives and help them explore their value and role in society. Highlighted programs included resident chaplains, who live in Baylor residence halls and play an instrumental role in providing pastoral care to students, and discipline-specific missions that provide opportunities for Baylor students to engage in missions work, while making use of their discipline-based education, training and professional giftedness."
